Welcome Back to the FINAL edition of Chatt Soil’s Beginner’s Guide to Aggregate! This is the end! The final post of the series! If you have been with us since the beginning- you are basically an expert on all things aggregate…OK, maybe not an EXPERT, but at least you have an idea of what it is! Today we are going to briefly revisit the first five (5) posts, as well as discuss some items that don’t really fall into one of the other categories.
Recap
While there are many different types of aggregate, Chatt Soil focuses on the ‘Big Four’:

1) Soil – A mixture of minerals, organic materials, air, and water. [I.E- DIRT]
2) Gravel – A loose aggregation of small water-worn or pounded stones
3) Mulch – Any material (wood chips, pine straw, bark, etc.) spread around or over planting areas to enrich or insulate the soil
4) Stone – Hard, solid, nonmetallic mineral matter
All of these ‘aggregate types’ can be found in yards, construction sites, and parks around the world. While the nuance of each material becomes a bit daunting, understanding the role that they play is fairly easy- and incredibly important for homeowners looking to improve their property.
Other important items
Sand
Filling sandboxes around the world, is SAND. Defined as “a loose granular substance, typically pale yellowish brown, resulting from the erosion of siliceous and other rocks”. While there are numerous varieties of sand, the product sold by Chatt Soil is safe for children and free of contaminates and hazardous materials.
Decorative Elements
Flagstone
Derived from Middle English flagge, meaning turf, combined with the Old Norse word flaga which means ‘slab or chip’- flag stone refers to large ‘sheets’ of sedimentary rock that have been split into layers along the bedding planes. These ‘sheets’ can be used in a variety of manners, based on thickness.
¾“ to 1½” – Overlays & Veneers
1¾” to 2¾” – non-loadbearing patios
3” to 4” – Driveways, walkways, ‘high-traffic’ areas
